Natural Deodorant FAQ's
-
Natural deodorants are made with natural ingredients, free from synthetic chemicals and will not block your skin’s pores, allowing your body to sweat naturally. Many natural deodorants, including our Salt of the Earth natural deodorant range, are also cruelty free and vegan, as well as being aluminium (chlorohydrate) free.
Our natural deodorants contain 100% natural ingredients including organic, skin soothing aloe vera, natural botanical extracts and essential oils, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium bicarbonate. These natural active ingredients absorb moisture, soothe skin, and of course leave you feeling fresh and smelling fragrant.

Our award-winning natural products are available in a range of different formats, including refillable sprays, roll-ons and balms. They are also vegan and cruelty free, and many are available in plastic-free packaging.

-
The application method of a natural deodorant rarely affects its ability to prevent body odour; it is simply a matter of personal preference. This is why Salt of the Earth natural deodorants are available in a wide range of formats.
-
Yes. As with all toiletries and skin care products, natural deodorants will have a shelf life or expiration date. The natural deodorants in the Salt of the Earth range are best used within 12 months of opening.
-
No. Unlike regular antiperspirants that work by blocking sweat glands and clogging pores with aluminium, natural deodorants work by combating the bacteria that break down sweat and cause the odour.
-
When switching from an aluminium-based deodorant to a natural alternative, your body may go through a detox period of 1-3 weeks, as your pores gradually lose the build-up of aluminium. This process can cause some additional sweating and odour which can sometimes lead to the incorrect belief that natural deodorant is ineffective. However, if you persevere, once your body has fully detoxified, the natural deodorant will be able to work effectively, and you will feel the full benefit.
-
It is commonly known that wearing a deodorant containing metallic substances such as aluminum can be an issue when having a mammogram as the particles contained within the deodorant can look like calcifications on the x-rays. However, there is debate as to whether natural deodorants that do not contain Aluminium Chlorohydrate or Aluminium Chloride can be worn.
In short, although aluminium free deodorants may not negatively affect mammograms, anything that leaves particles in the underarm area could potentially lead to inaccurate results, and so it is better not to apply anything to your underarms directly before an examination.
-
Yes! Boots sells a variety of different natural deodorants, including our Salt of the Earth range.
-
It is important to highlight that deodorant and antiperspirant are not the same. While the two terms are often used interchangeably, they work in very different ways.
Deodorant typically works by combating the bacteria that break down sweat and cause the odour; it doesn’t actually stop you from sweating. In contrast, antiperspirant contains aluminium which blocks sweat glands and plugs your pores, so the bacteria on the top of your skin does not react with the apocrine sweat and create an odour.
-
We all know that armpits get smelly when we sweat, but what you might not know is that it is not actually the sweat itself that smells. When we perspire, apocrine sweat breaks down and mixes with the bacteria on our skin, and it is this combination of bacteria plus apocrine secretions which causes the odour.

Aluminium Chlorohydrate and Aluminium Chloride are compounds commonly found in antiperspirants and deodorants.
Aluminium compounds block pores and are therefore used in antiperspirants and deodorants to stop sweating. However, it has been linked to a variety of health issues over the years, including disruption to oestrogen levels and breast cancer and possible (currently unproven) connections to Alzheimer’s disease.
-
Potassium Alum is a natural mineral salt used as an alternative to Aluminium Chlorohydrate/Chloride. Alum’s antimicrobial properties have been celebrated for hundreds of years, with applications including topical astringent, an antiseptic for wounds, acne and tonsillitis, and a toner to tighten the pores.
While Potassium Alum (also known more commonly as ‘alum’) is from the same mineral family as Aluminium Chlorohydrate/Chloride, it is a very different material.
Potassium Alum is comprised of large molecules that are unable to penetrate the skin barrier. In contrast, Aluminium Chlorohydrate/Chloride is comprised of much smaller molecules that are absorbed by the skin, plugging sweat glands, and preventing the release of unwanted toxins from the body.
-
The term ‘aluminium free deodorant’ typically refers to Aluminium Chlorohydrate/Chloride free, as opposed to aluminium salt free deodorant. This is because many deodorants (including the Salt of the Earth range) contain Potassium Alum, which is from the aluminium salt family, but does not have the same controversial reputation.

One of the biggest concerns relating to aluminium-based deodorants or antiperspirants is that our bodies sweat for a reason, so preventing the perspiration process also prevents the body from cleansing and detoxifying itself naturally by releasing toxins. If these toxins cannot be released, they can find their way into your lymph nodes and bloodstream.

In the case of kids with sensitive skin, we would suggest opting for a natural deodorant that is free from synthetic ingredients. However, children and adults can sometimes react to even the most natural ingredients, so we would always recommend reading the ingredients carefully and doing a small patch test, before using the deodorant properly.
Our natural deodorants contain 100% natural ingredients including organically grown, skin soothing aloe vera, natural botanical extracts and essential oils, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium bicarbonate. Paraben Free Deodorant FAQs
-
Parabens are a widely used preservative, added to skincare products and deodorants to prevent bacteria and mould growth.
-
It is believed that parabens can disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen activity, and have been linked to hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer and early puberty in children. However, whilst it is thought that large quantities of the chemicals could cause these issues, the concentrations of parabens used in cosmetics and toiletries are only around 0.3% to 1%, which is considered too low to be capable of causing any ill effects.
From an industry authority perspective, the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has stated: “Parabens are officially approved for use under the Cosmetics Directive (76/768/EEC), the European legislation that regulates all cosmetics and toiletries. We can reassure the public that all cosmetic and toiletry products containing parabens may continue to be used safely.”
Despite this declaration, many people still have doubts and concerns, which is why the entire Salt of the Earth range of deodorants is paraben free.
-

Vegan Deodorant FAQs
-
There are two main reasons why mainstream deodorants might not be vegan friendly.
The first has nothing to do with the ingredients used in the manufacture of these products, but instead relates to many big deodorant brands continuing to test their deodorants on animals.
The second reason is the use of beeswax in the manufacture of some deodorants which, as an animal derived product, is not suitable for vegans.
Our entire Salt of the Earth range of natural deodorants is approved by both the Vegan and Vegetarian Societies and is Leaping Bunny approved, which is the international gold standard for cruelty free consumer products.
-
Yes! Whilst many people are sceptical about how well vegan friendly and natural products work, advances in product development mean that manufacturers can produce cruelty free, vegan, natural deodorant that is just as effective as regular deodorant.
The Salt of the Earth range offers long-lasting, effective, vegan friendly protection from odour that will leave you feeling and smelling fresh all day.

Natural deodorants do not contain synthetic chemicals, and so opting for a natural vegan deodorant full of natural ingredients that are naturally kind to skin such as natural mineral salts, essential oils, and soothing aloe vera is usually the best option. However, product intolerances can occur at any time, to anyone, regardless of how natural or gentle the product is, so we would always recommend doing a small patch test before using any new deodorant, and particularly if you have sensitive skin.
